The literature review summarizes key policies, programs and theories of global citizenship education within the context of post secondary institutions. It is apparent that educating for global citizenship has become a shared goal of educators and educational institutions who are interested in expanding their own and their students’ understanding of what it means to enact citizenship in the twenty-first century. This goal is, however, complicated by the multitude of definitions and conceptualizations that are contested and in significant tension with one another.
